Who Will Take Home Gold In Paris
Olympic Golf
Good morning,
Let’s dive in…
Developing Stories 📰

This year the Olympic Golf Individual brings together sixty of the world's top golfers in Paris, France, to compete for their countries. The men's and women's competitions will take place at Le Golf National on the Albatros Course, a venue familiar from hosting the annual Open De France and the 2018 Ryder Cup.
Although this is the first time the course is used for the Olympics, Le Golf National has a well-established reputation. Opened in 1990 and designed by Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge it underwent significant renovations in 2015 to prepare for major tournaments. The course, while not exceptionally long at 7,174 yards, presents numerous challenges. The renovation aimed to enhance its stadium-like qualities, making it a premier tournament venue.
The course's most notable moment came as the host of the 2018 Ryder Cup. Its design demands precise tee shots, a feature emphasized by input from the European Team. The annual Open De France also showcases a setup that is expected for the Olympics. Key to navigating the course is positioning, with the roughs presenting varying degrees of challenge: 2.5 inches for the first cut, 3.3 inches for the second, and a punishing 4.7 inches for the deepest rough. Golf Course Superintendent Lucas Pierre has allowed some margin for error, but major mistakes will be costly. The greens are relatively small, averaging 6,458 square feet, and are protected by numerous bunkers and water hazards, impacting play on over half of the holes.
The greens are a blend of Poa and Creeping Bentgrass, which might be slower and bumpier than usual due to expected rain and careful maintenance to preserve the course's condition for back-to-back tournament weeks. This year has been particularly wet in Paris, likely leading to softer and slower playing conditions.
