Open Championship
Scottie and Rory atop the favorites coming in
Good morning,
Let’s dive in…
Developing Stories 📰

The 151st British open will be a play different from the previous year’s event at St. Andrews. The tournament will take place at Royal Liverpool, located on the Irish Sea just south of Liverpool. The course features flat terrain with vast fields of fescue grass and 84 bunkers, spanning a par-71 and 7,383 yards. The layout has seen changes since the last Open Championship in 2014 when Rory was Champion Golfer of the Year. The course scorecard showed par 72, but now, the par 5 10th hole has become a par 4, and a brand-new 17th hole has been introduced. The challenge remains the same for the field of 156 players.
Compared to St. Andrews ‘wide fairways and extensive greens, Royal Liverpool presents a different challenge. The narrow fairway corridors and small putting surfaces demand precise accuracy off the tee. The course is lined with knee-high fescue three to five yards from the fairway, with eleven of the fourteen holes featuring fairway bunkers and six holes posing out-of-bounds threats. Such conditions make it rare to witness so many opportunities for even the world’s finest golfers to face such trouble off the tee.
This year’s weather conditions are expected to be like those in 2014, with an inch of rain anticipated before the championship and another inch during its competition. Soft conditions will favor longer, more accurate ball strikers, providing an advantage to players like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. Players such as Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, and Rory McIlroy have shown great success in wet conditions on the Tour over the past five years.
Coastal golf tends to brin gout the best in certain players. Over the last five years on the PGA Tour, the top 5 coastal players have been Rahm, Hovland, Cam Smith, Xander, and Colin Morikawa. The last 10 Open winners have been ranked No.40 or better in the Official WGR, with 6 of them positioned within the top 10. Recent form also plays a crucial role as 16 of the last 22 winners since Tiger in 1000 had won earlier in the season before claiming the Claret Jug. The No. 1 ranked player in the OWGR has not won the Open since Tiger in 2006, and 8 of the last 10 had played the week before the event.

Picks 🔒

Giants -115 | What makes me so confident in the Giants here is their 7-game win streak combined with the Reds’ 6-game losing streak. San Francisco also holds a 6-4 edge in the last 10 meetings between these clubs. What puts this bet over the top for me is the Giants’ stellar road record and the Reds’ poor home record.
Guardians -135 | Cleveland has outscored Pittsburgh 21-1 so far in this series. The Guardians are using Civale, who has been money on the road this season, and the Bucs counter with Hill, who has been subpar while looking his age.
