Developing Stories 📰

We are a few weeks away from the start of college football. As the release of the preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll indicates the beginning of of football

The two-time reigning national champion Georgia will begin the season as the top-ranked team at No. 1. Among the 66 coaches' votes, the Bulldogs received the honor on 61 ballots. This marks the Bulldogs' second preseason No. 1 ranking since the poll's inauguration by USA TODAY in 1991, with their first in 2008 resulting in a season-ending rank of No. 10. Occupying the No. 2 position is Michigan, achieving its highest-ever preseason rank in the coaches poll. Despite not claiming any first-place selections, the Wolverines comfortably secured a 21-point lead over third-ranked Alabama.

In spite of an unusual absence from the playoffs in 2022, the Crimson Tide managed to get four preseason No. 1 votes for this year. Interestingly, their No. 3 starting point might hold promise, given that two of their championship endeavors in 2015 and 2020 embarked from a preseason No. 3 rank. Ohio State lays claim to the lone remaining first-place vote and will initiate the season at No. 4 overall. LSU takes the No. 5 spot, contributing to the SEC's dominance with three of the top five positions, while Tennessee sits at No. 10. Southern California launches from No. 6, trailed by another representative of the Big Ten, Penn State, at No. 7. ACC favorites Florida State and Clemson secure the eighth and ninth positions, respectively. Notably, the No. 8 start marks the highest for the Seminoles since 2017.

The transformed Big 12 fails to break into the top 10, with Texas leading the conference at No. 12. TCU, the runner-up in last year's College Football Playoff, commences at No. 16, while traditional powerhouse Oklahoma finds itself at No. 19, a preseason position not seen since 2015. A sign of positivity emerges for the conference, with No. 24 Texas Tech securing a preseason rank for the first time since 2008. Additionally, No. 18 Oregon State enjoys its loftiest preseason rank since 2001, during which current head coach Jonathan Smith served as the Beavers' starting quarterback. Meanwhile, No. 23 Tulane, reigning champion of the American Athletic Conference and the Cotton Bowl, revels in its inaugural preseason ranking.

In the grand scheme, the SEC leads the charge with six teams featured in the rankings. Following suit, the Pac-12 and Big 12 each make their presence known with five representatives. The Big Ten and ACC trail with four and three respectively. Among the schools, Tulane stands as the sole representative of the American conference, while independent Notre Dame secures the 13th spot.
