MLB Trade Deadline
Who will be buyers and sellers as the deadline approaches
Good morning,
Let’s dive in…
Developing Stories 📰

As the 2023 MLB trade deadline approaches, the focus on top baseball teams is set on strengthening their rosters for one final push. The deadline is set for 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 1st and anticipation is high for potential last-minute blockbusters. Although last year’s deadline we saw a major trade involving Juan Soto and Josh Bell, this year’s deals might not reach that magnitude, but there are still some noteworthy players likely to be on the move. Let’s take a closer look at the latest news and predictions leading up to Tuesday’s deadline.
In 2022, Juan Soto was the most sought-after player during the trade deadline, and this year, it's Shohei Ohtani who holds that worth. The Los Angeles Angels' exceptional pitcher and slugger has been at the center of trade rumors throughout the season. However, it seems the Angels are keen on retaining one of the best baseball players in recent history. Ohtani is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024, creating the risk of losing him without any return if they dont make a move now.
Despite trailing far behind in the NL East race, the Miami Marlins are still in contention for a wild-card spot with a solid record above .500. Strengthening their pitching staff might be the key to improving their chances of making the postseason. Reports suggest that the Marlins are interested in acquiring Michael Lorenzen, an All-Star pitcher from the Detroit Tigers. The Baltimore Orioles are also eyeing Lorenzen, and it remains uncertain whether Detroit is willing to part ways with the 31-year-old pitcher, who is set to become a free agent after the season.
The New York Mets made a significant investment in the offseason by signing Justin Verlander to a massive two-year contract. However, they might be open to trading the 40-year-old ace before the deadline. The Texas Rangers are currently leading the chase for Verlander, with the Houston Astros also expressing interest. The decision ultimately lies with Verlander, as he holds a full no-trade clause in his contract. So far, the Mets have not approached him about waiving this clause, but they might reconsider if a compelling offer comes their way.
As for a potential trade involving Juan Soto, it appears highly unlikely than trade deals involving free agents Blake Snell and Josh Hader. Soto has been a valuable asset for the San Diego Padres, earning his third-consecutive All-Star appearance. Despite their struggles this season, the Padres seem determined to buy rather than sell at the deadline, making a Soto trade extremely unlikely. If San Diego does change its stance, they would be more prone to move starting pitcher Blake Snell or closer Josh Hader rather than Soto. Nevertheless, any deal involving Soto would require a massive offer, considering his recent arrival and outstanding performance. With pitching in high demand this year, meeting the Padres' requirements for Soto seems challenging.
