Genesis Invitational

Tiger is back

Good morning,

Letโ€™s dive inโ€ฆ

Developing Stories ๐Ÿ“ฐ

Following another successful tournament in Phoenix, the PGA TOUR is set to move on to Riviera for its third major event of the year, the Genesis Invitational. Hosted by none other than Tiger Woods himself, this tournament marks Tiger's return to the course since the Hero World Challenge. The anticipation surrounding Tiger's participation brings not only considerable attention but also a substantial purse and a substantial top prize. Woods is making his first appearance on the PGA TOUR this year, having secured an 18th-place finish in the Hero World Challenge.

Jon Rahm will not be defending his 2023 title. Max Homa and Adam Scott are among the notable contenders in a highly competitive field. Scottie Scheffler, unsurprisingly, leads the odd board alongside Rory McIlroy. Despite not completing a three-peat in Phoenix, Scheffler's impressive performance continues to dominate discussions. Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele are also returning to action after withdrawing from the WM Phoenix Open.

With just under 70 golfers in the field, Tiger Woods has insisted on a cut despite the event's signature status. The top 50 and ties will advance to the weekend rounds. Riviera Country Club presents a genuine challenge for golf's elite featuring undulating fairways, intricate green complexes, doglegs, and plenty of sand hazards. While distance and driving skills are advantageous the kikuyu grass at Riviera requires accuracy and precise positioning for successful shots. Over the past two decades, the cut line for this event has consistently been par or worse. Saving par and avoiding bogeys are crucial for making the cut. The uncertainty surrounding the cut line this weekend arises from the limited field of 65 players or more.

In 2023 Jon Rahm secured victory with a remarkable 11.9 strokes gained on approach. Similarly, in 2022, Joaquin Niemann showcased exceptional ball-striking, gaining 7.1 strokes on approach. Players aiming for the $3.5 million top prize must deliver a stellar ball-striking performance. Around-the-green play will be pivotal, with comparisons drawn to Augusta National and Quail Hollow due to the necessity for creativity around tricky green complexes. While the course layout differs, players equipped with a versatile short game will thrive over the weekend.

Most par-4 holes fall within the 450-500 yard range, emphasizing the importance of proximity from 150-175 yards. Viktor Hovland leads in this category over his last 36 holes on par-4s of this length, followed by Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg, and Patrick Cantlay. Aberg, enjoying a successful 2024 season, has secured back-to-back T10 finishes in his last two starts.

Arizona State -7 | ASU is the better team here and they have home court advantage. Oregon State doesnโ€™t even average 60 ppg or shooting 40% away with a high turnover margin.
