This week sees the end of an era. The Honda Classic has been a regular tournament on the PGA Tour, but Honda Motors has announced the end of its sponsorship of the tournament. Tournaments like the Honda Classic are great, the 2020 winner Sungjae Im is the favorite at +900. Past the eight players in the top 50 of the World Golf Ranking, this tournament is wide open. The Average winning score in the last 15 years is 9.5 under par. In the last 10 years the average winners odds are more than 120-1. Long shots succeed at the Honda and that makes for an entertaining week. PGA National member club can be difficult when the winds are blowing.  The forecast doesn’t call for gusting winds, it will still blow as the course is only six miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Temperatures this week are in the mid-80s. There’s no rain in the forecast and this area hasn’t seen much precipitation in weeks.

Keeping your golf ball in play is the top priority this week. Seven of the last 10 years, the Champion course has been the toughest non-major course on tour. This will take a very patient and well-rounded approach.  The top area of separation for the last 10 winners is on the approach. The winner as gained an avg. of 6.4 strokes against the field in that time. 50% of the shots into the green come from 150-200 yards. Players will hit less wedge or long iron shots. Players hit just 60% of their Greens in regulation, which is below tour average. Driving is premium as playing from this bermudagrass rough is very tough, the avg. green size is 7,000 sq feet and firm which will be difficult to approach.
