The PGA tour stays in Florida for the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club and Lodge. Rahm is the 7-1 top favorite in the latest odds. Rory McIlroy is 19-2, Scottie Scheffler is 11-1, Max Homa is 19-1, Colin Morikawa is 21-1, Justin Thomas is 23-1, Xander Schauffle is 24-1 and Will Zalataoris is 24-1. These are the top contenders in the field. The Arnold Palmer Invitational has been played on tour since 1979 and the $20 million purse makes this one of the most competitive tournaments of the year, featuring 44 of the top 50 golfers in the world. The course can play hard because of the wind can make for firm and fast conditions with strong winds that can cause mayhem. The long rough can be almost as punishing as the occasional water ball. Driving distance and swing speed have been key factors here over the years, but strokes gained on approach has been the top key when conditions are at their toughest. When you look at the path to victory for the last 10 winners it is easy to understand why approach play stands out. Bay Hill is one of the toughest non-major courses and tests your long irons like no other course on the tour. The average strokes-gained on approach for each over the last 10 years is over five. Iron play will allow you to compete, but this is what will separate you from the rest of the leaderboard. Take Tiger Woods' eight wins for example. He was the best long iron player to ever swing a club. That level of iron play distinguishes a champion. Add his approach play with an amazing short game, solid putting and you can see why he dominated here. There is a few players here that have the power and accuracy to save themselves from bogey on this tough course that I will be taking this weekend.
