3M Open

Good morning,

Let’s dive in…

Developing Stories 📰

Brian Harman surprised the world last week with an impressive six-shot victory at the 151st Open. This marked his first major win since his debut in 2014. As the PGA tour is on to the 3M Open in the Midwest. The 2023 majors campaign may have concluded but there is no time for the players to rest as only two events remain in the regular season: the 3M Open and the Wyndham Championship next weekend. Over the years the 3M has successfully attracted top talent and this year is no exception. The event will take place at the TPC Twin Cities just north of Minneapolis. Designed by Arnold Palmer in 2000, the course underwent renovations in 2018 to make it suitable for the PGA Tour before hosting its inaugural tournament in 2019.

TPC Twin Cities offers golfers generous fairways, but errant shots are severely penalized, with water hazards present on 15 holes- approximately 8 percent of missed fairways result in penalties, making it one of the top 5 courses on tour with high penalty rates for wayward drives. The field records an average of 1.66 double-bogeys or worse per 72 holes making it comparable to water-heavy courses like Bay Hill and TPC Southwind.

TPC Twin Cities features a par 71 layout stretching to 7,431 yards from the back tees. The course has four par 4s that measure over 465 yards and two that play under 385 yards. Additionally, all three par 5s approach the 600-yard mark but are still reachable by many players in the field. Power hitters have an advantage at Twin Cities, as three of the previous four champions possess considerable driving distance.

The winning scores have varied from 15 under to 21 under. Low scores typically favor elite putters, but with numerous water hazards throughout the course emphasis is also placed on hitting fairways and greens. Golfers can expect Midwest setting with bluegrass rough and bentgrass putting surfaces. When comparing the 3M open to other courses, Detroit GC and TPC Deere run are seen as closest comparison courses along with Silverado Resort and TPC Sawgrass which show similar characteristics in terms of scoring ease, water presence and putt surfaces.

Picks 🔒

Cubs -120 | The Cubs are the lone team in the NL Central with a positive run differential and hope to make up some ground in a weak NL Central. Meanwhile, Lynn has been inconsistent as you don’t know if he’ll give you seven shutout innings or get hit for five-plus runs in any given start.
