149th Kentucky Derby

Good morning,

Let’s dive in…

Developing Stories 📰

There is one more day until the fastest two minutes in sports with the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby. The storyline of Derby week has been the number of horses scratched from the race, as four were removed from the field in a 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday. Santa Anita Derby winner Practical Move (10-1) was a contender of note but was the first horse scratched from the race on Thursday due to an elevated temperature. Three more horses were scratched as well. As for the horses still scheduled to run in the Derby one year after longshot Rich Strike shocked the world by winning at 80-1 odds, this year's race features another wide-open field. Forte, who was named the champion 2-year-old last year and won the Florida Derby five weeks ago, has been installed as the lukewarm 3-1 morning-line favorite. Tapit Trice, who is the most expensive horse in the race at $1.3 million, is the 5-1 second choice. Both horses are trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, who already owns two Derby wins. In Kentucky Derby history, no post position has produced more winners than No. 5 with 10 over 148 years. No. 10 comes in second with nine winners. No. 5 is something inspiring for Tapit Trice. The favorites haven't fared too well of late. Forte has left a little more of an opening, while Tapit Trice seems better suited to take the Belmont based on pedigree history. Angel of Empire, sired by Classic Empire, seems just right to win the Derby with Cox, Prat, post position and stamina all on his side.

Weekend Picks 🔒

Nuggets +4 or +160 | With three days of rest, Denver is 5-0 against the spread in their last five outings. They’re also 5-0 ATS in their last five head-to-head matchups with Phoenix. The Suns have also failed to cover in four straight conference semifinal games, and they’re 0-4 ATS against teams with a winning percentage of .600 or better.

Heat -3.5 | Butler should be ready to play in Miami, and with him in the lineup, the Heat has much better prospects of winning. Spoelstra knows how to adapt and adjust to any circumstance.

Oilers -125 | Edmonton rarely loses back-to-back games and has the talent to put pressure on Vegas. The Oilers should attack early and not let up especially if Brossoit plays as poorly as he did earlier this week.
